Department of Media and Culture Studies, Utrecht University, the Netherlands. MSc in Climate Physics (with honours) from the
Institute of Marine and Atmospheric Research, Utrecht University, the Netherlands.
Research interests
- modelling of climate change
- physical oceanography
- ocean observation
- nonlinear climate dynamics (a.k.a. tipping points)
I work on
- the processes governing water mass transformation (WMT) in the subpolar North Atlantic Ocean (SPNA). In this region, the northward-flowing surface limb of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is linked to its southward-flowing deep limb through the transformation of water from buoyant to dense. My aim is to isolate, describe, and quantify the physical processes that govern these transformations in density space. Part 1 of this project involves analysing the spatial heterogeneity of volume transport within the SPNA using the GLORYS12 reanalysis. Part 2 consists of developing an idealised, yet eddy-resolving, model simulation using MITgcm to study the individual processes governing WMT in isolation. Part 3 revisits AMOC time series in GLORYS12, focusing on characteristic periods of low and high AMOC strength and attributing these to the governing processes.
